Overview
"Cendrillon" (Cinderella) is Charles Perrault's fairy tale, Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre (1697, Wikipedia, "Cendrillon"). Marie names it twice, in two different stage versions that are not the same work. Neither has been identified with a printed title.
Marie and this work
- 28 March 1873, Nice. At the Théâtre-Français, after Molière's Tartuffe ("beau... mais fatigant"), she "se ranime" at the second piece, "Cendrillon, très bien jouée" (003.0122). She had her blue silk dress; the theatre was full of "monde élégant" and the White family sat beside them (003.0123). The piece was probably a one-act comedy, vaudeville or féerie played by the local company; nothing further could be found.
- 14 August 1873, Vienna. At Renz's circus (the Vienna Exposition), "une pantomime, Cendrillon", performed by children, in which historical figures appear: Bismarck, Moltke, Napoléon, Thiers, Mac-Mahon, the Shah and Tsar Alexander, which angers Marie "pour la Russie" (008.0025). A circus pantomime with political parade: this is plainly not the Nice piece.
