Thematic Tag: Ambition & Fame

This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs where Marie writes about her hunger for glory, greatness and a name that will outlast her: wanting to be célèbre, measuring herself against the famous, fearing obscurity and a life without distinction. Ambition is the diary's engine from the first carnets (a singer's career, then a painter's), and it is the other pole of her despair: "à quoi bon vivre sans génie".

Tagging Criteria

  • Tag a stated desire for glory, fame or greatness ("je veux la gloire", "je serai célèbre", "être quelqu'un").
  • Tag Marie ranking herself against the great, or against rivals, as a question of destiny and reputation.
  • Tag fear of obscurity or of a wasted life; the price she would pay for a name.
  • Tag what fame would mean to her: triumphs, applause, being known to posterity.
  • Do not tag someone else described as famous, with no bearing on her own hopes.
  • Do not tag the work itself (studio, lessons, the Salon): that is Her Art, unless the paragraph is about the glory it should bring.
  • Do not tag vanity about her looks or her dress (Beauty & Appearance, Clothing & Fashion).
  • Do not tag an admiring remark about a celebrity she meets, unless it is turned on herself.
  • The bar is that the paragraph is substantively about the theme; a passing word never qualifies. A paragraph takes at most three themes.

  • False friends: gloire in a religious sense ("gloire à Dieu"); célèbre as a plain epithet of another person

Notable Patterns

  • Early carnets tie fame to the voice and the stage; from 1877 it passes to painting and the Salon.
  • Ambition often shares a paragraph with Mortality: the fear of dying before she has become anyone.
  • Reader-addresses about her future fame also take Addressing the Reader.
