Overview

Marie's «Carrier-Belleuse» is «le fils du statuaire», the painter Pierre Carrier-Belleuse (28 January 1851 – 29 January 1932), son of the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887); he exhibited at the Salon from 1875, painted dancers and pastels, and made the small Panorama de Notre-Dame de Lourdes of 1881 (Wikipedia, «Pierre Carrier-Belleuse»; a web search dated the Lourdes panorama to 1881). The Mon Journal t.15 index calls him «Carrier-Belleuse (Albert-Louis)», a name not found in the sources; t.14 has «Carrier-Belleuse (M.) : 254, 262, 272, 275». The 1881 panorama fits 093.0385, where Marie wants to buy the studies for the «panorama de Lourdes par Carrier-Belleuse, le fils du statuaire», exhibited in the cercle at 36 rue Vivienne. Confidence 0.8; the father the sculptor is a different person.

Relevance to Marie

  • 21 November 1881. The exhibition of the studies and the project for the Lourdes panorama at 36 rue Vivienne: she asks to buy, he is «très aimable et gentil» but cannot sell (093.0385). He had called on them the day before.

He calls (094.0051); the family and Brisbane visit him on 6 January («il s'occupe tout le temps de mes tons», 094.0142, where she judges: «n'a pas un talent monstre... mais il a une qualité»); on 13 January, Carrier-Belleuse «fondait sous mes yeux» and, «tout ramolli et sentimental», insisted on the cruelty of her motto Gloriae Cupiditas (094.0164), and she judges him «un garçon capable de devenir très amoureux» (094.0165).
  • 30 April – 26 May 1882. At a gathering with Bojidar, the Gaillards, Julian and others (095.0003); her mother thinks he is in love with her (095.0004); at the Salon with Gavini on 26 May (095.0106).
  • 19 July 1882. She hears she is on the mind of «un autre grand seigneur, comme qui dirait Carrier-Belleuse» (095.0317).
