Poznámky
Gentilhomme de la Chambre: an honorary court appointment conferring the right of formal presentation. ↩
The Paparigopoulos whom Marie knew at Spa (Belgium) in 1874, also called Michel (053.0177). Marie first takes the two for one man («c'est le même», 053.0177), and the Mon Journal t.5 and t.7 indexes have a single entry; that this one «rappelle» the Spa man «tout en ne lui ressemblant pas du tout» suggests two different men. The question is open. ↩
"La Captive": an elegy by André Chénier (1762–1794), the French poet guillotined during the Terror. The line "ma coupe est encore pleine" (my cup is still full) is a declaration of life and hope. ↩
Misera me: "Wretched me" — Italian. ↩
La déesse à la trompette: Fame personified as a goddess with a trumpet; i.e., rumour and social gossip. ↩
