Overview

Tiste, a comic actor of the Théâtre français at Nice in 1875–77: Marie calls him «Tiste du Théâtre français de Nice» (068.0797), and the Mon Journal indexes list «Tiste (M.), acteur» (t.6 pp. 44, 77, 110; t.9 p. 277) and, for 1882, «Tiste (boutique) : 292» (t.14). The name is the usual stage short form of Baptiste; the actor's full name is not given. See THEATRE_FRANCAIS_NICE.

Relevance to Marie

  • Nice, 1875. In La Boule he has a refrain that Marie quotes to answer her family's «palinodies» (034.0399; see LA_BOULE). In September–October 1875 Marie sits in a stage box at the Théâtre français and Tiste «dit toutes ses bêtises à notre loge» (045.0320); she imitates the "Si !" that makes the house laugh and enjoys exchanging looks with the actors (046.0101). In Lecocq's Giroflé-Girofla he plays «le père Boléro-Tiste» (047.0032), and she calls the operetta «Giro» for short because Tiste does (047.0166, marginal note). On 27 October she recites from Alice de Nevers (see ALICE_DE_NEVERS): «Oui papa, que répondent les huit filles de Tiste» (048.0120). See GIROFLE_GIROFLA.
  • 1877. She compares a young man to Audiffret or «Tiste du Théâtre français de Nice» for his teasing (068.0797).
  • 1882. At the Nice carnival (entry of 21 February 1882) «nous nous rendons chez Tiste qui nous loue des dominos de calicots à pois rouges» (094.0284), a costume shop (the Mon Journal t.14 index has «Tiste (boutique)»). Whether the shopkeeper is the actor is not stated (the same name, the same town); the tag is kept here pending that question.
