Count Arnim

Overview

A Prussian count of the Nice winter society of 1874 and 1875: «un comte Arnim, Prussien», said by «les méchantes langues» to be the good friend of Princess Souvoroff (017.0091, 1 March 1874). In November 1874 Marie calls him «le comte Arnim celui de l'année passée» (026.0030) and on 6 December «le comte A. d'Arnim» (027.0181), so the two seasons concern one man. She notices him for his complexion, «frais et capable de plaire» (027.0181), «un homme qui n'est qu'à cause de son teint» (027.0354).

• 1874-11-22 (026.0030): at the Opéra, «seulement le comte Arnim celui de l'année passée».
• 1874-12-06, 12-21, 12-23, 12-25 (027.0181, 027.0354, 027.0388, 028.0030): at church, on the promenade, in her aunt's teasing list «d'Audiffret, de Lambertye, de Jarakowsky, d'Arnim».
• 1875-01-09 (028.0206): in the young men's box with Lambertye, Woerman, Furstenberg and Audiffret.
• 1875-01-27, 01-28, 02-06 (029.0081, 029.0091, 029.0214): at the Italiens with Furstenberg; among the gamblers and marksmen; «Arnim était là, Audiffer aussi».
• 1875-03-16 (030.0237): «Il y avait bien Arnim, mais pour peu de temps».

Identity uncertain

We are not sure who this count is. The obvious candidate, the ambassador Harry von Arnim (#Count Harry von Arnim), was recalled from Paris in 1874 and under prosecution in Berlin from October 1874, which makes it unlikely that he is the young man about town of the Nice season of 1874–75, though he may be a relative. The Mon Journal index gives no first name. If you can identify him, we would be glad to hear from you.
