Burgos

Overview

The Castilian city where Marie and her mother and aunt arrive on the evening of Thursday 29 September 1881 on the way from Biarritz to Madrid. She mostly writes about the company: «Si vous croyez que le voyage avec mes mères est un plaisir, vous vous trompez joliment» (093.0159); of the guide, «le guide disant qu'il fait froid à Burgos c'est une vraie désolation, et on aurait dû emporter les pelisses». Of the journey itself, the Pyrenees strike her «par leur beauté majestueuse» (093.0158).

• 1881-10-02 (093.0158, 093.0159, 093.0161): arrival and the family quarrel; «Donc Burgos... Ah ! elles sont insupportables».
• 1881-10-14 (093.0221): tagged while she writes of the disappointment of Toledo.
• 1882-06-20 (095.0192): looking back: «Comment j'ai passé à Tolède, Burgos, Cordoue, Séville, Grenade ! ... Eh bien c'est de la fièvre. Y retourner !!!» (footnote: Théophile Gautier's Voyage en Espagne).
