Overview

The Paris district of the Ternes, in the north-west. In December 1881 Marie, in a low mood, thinks of Mlle Tchernitsky («La Tchernitsky, folle de bois ?») and of the place she lives: «Jusqu'au quartier qu'elle habite, les Ternes; et mon quartier à moi, si propre, si uniforme, où l'on ne voit ni une pauvresse, ni un arbre non-taillé, ni une rue tortueuse. Bref je me plains contre la fortune» (094.0094-0095). See Tchernitsky.
