Overview

The Teatro Valle, near Sant'Andrea della Valle in the centre of Rome, built for the Capranica family to designs by Tommaso Morelli and opened on 7 January 1727; rebuilt in masonry by Giuseppe Valadier and Gaspare Salvi around 1818-1822. Rossini's La Cenerentola had its premiere there in 1817; in the second half of the nineteenth century it turned increasingly to spoken drama and lighter fare (en.wikipedia «Teatro Valle»; FAI, «Teatro Valle»).

Relevance to Marie

In the spring of 1876 the Valle is the family's other Roman theatre after the Apollo, with French operetta on the bill and the Caccia-Club in its barcaccia:

  • 11 March: first night of La Vie parisienne (055/1876-03-11); 23 March: La Fille de Mme Angot, an evening of tension with Pietro Antonelli (055/1876-03-23), afterwards recalled as the evening of «cette impertinence au Valle» (055/1876-03-25, 056/1876-03-27).
  • 10 April: Madame l'Archiduc «au bénéfice de la première chanteuse Preziosi» (057/1876-04-10).
  • 27 April: Pietro still resents «la soirée du Valle où vous avez fait cette supposition si humiliante» (059.0500).
