Overview

The «bon roi Dagobert» of the French nursery song, who «avait mis sa culotte à l'envers»: a comic figure of the Merovingian king Dagobert I, in a satirical song that dates from the French Revolution and mocks later kings (en.wikipedia «Le Bon Roi Dagobert (song)»).

Relevance to Marie

Not a person Marie meets. On 10 June 1874, in Paris, she writes: «Bien que n'étant point le roi Dagobert, j'ai mis mon jupon à l'envers; je prévoyais donc quelque chose de désagréable» (020.0200), then spends an hour and a half at the Bon Marché. The joke is that she has her petticoat on inside out, as the king in the song, and expects bad luck.
