Overview

«Le vieux Plantus», an elderly acquaintance of the Howards and of Marie's family in Nice in 1873–74. The Mon Journal indexes list «Plantus (M.)» in t.2 (pp. 160–161, 185–186) and t.4 (p. 249). Nothing is known of him beyond the diary.

Relevance to Marie

On 5 November 1873 he is at the Nice station when the Howards arrive: «Le vieux Plantus est là, il voyageait avec les Howard mais arriva quelques heures avant eux»; to pass the half-hour wait Marie asks him the names of the flowers (012.0068). On 20 November 1873 she stays behind: «Nous n'allâmes pas avec Plantus, je suis indisposée» (012.0299). On 18 December 1874 he insists on taking her to see wild flowers at Copland, but «je m'en suis débarrassée Gracias a Dios» (027.0299). He is evidently a plant lover and a persistent walking companion; the diary does not give his first name, nationality or occupation.
