Novoic Vremia
Also known as: Novoic Vremia, Vremia
Overview
Novoye Vremya («Новое время», New Times) was a daily of St Petersburg published from 1868 to 1917; it began as a liberal paper, passed in 1876 to Aleksey Suvorin, who edited it until his death, and under him became one of the most widely read Russian dailies (circulation about 60,000) and a conservative, government-friendly voice. It was closed on 8 November 1917 (new style). (Source: Wikipedia, «Novoye Vremya (newspaper)», https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novoye_Vremya_(newspaper).)
Relevance to Marie
The paper is how the Paris Salon and Marie reached the Russian public in 1883.
- 3 July 1883. «Enfin voici l'article du "Nouveau Temps"» (100.0278): the article is flattering, and its statement that she is nineteen embarrasses her, since she is twenty-four («l'on m'en donne encore d'avantage»); «l'effet en Russie sera très grand». The article's author is not named in the diary.
- 2 October 1883. She gives a dinner for Julian and the journalist Bagnitsky «qui a parlé de son atelier dans le "Novoïc Vremia"» (101.0485), her own spelling of the title. On the journalist see BAGNITSKY.
Marie writes the title in French at 100.0278 and in a transcription of the Russian at 101.0485, so aliases cover both.
