Overview

A Russian lady in Nice with whom the Bashkirtseff household had a bitter feud in 1872–73. Not further identified; the Mon Journal t.12 index has only «Tolstoy (Mme) : 225, 228». Not to be confused with the writer's family.

Relevance to Marie

  • 004.0155 (1873-04-24): the quarrel began about eight months earlier «parce que notre singe a mordu son fils»; since then Mme Tolstoy «répand les calomnies les plus affreuses» about the family (004.0156), and Maman will not let into the house «des gens qui nous calomnient … qui écrivent même dans les journaux» (004.0159).
  • 004.0372 (1873-05-17): «c'est Georges qui a donné des soufflets à la Tolstoy», Marie's uncle Georges Babanine slaps her. In June Marie mentions «ce misérable procès de Tolstoy» (006/1873-06-21); what the case was about is not stated there.
  • 084.0339 (1879-02-27): six years later, during Paul's quarrel with Prince Constantin Eristoff in Nice, Marie fears the Tutcheffs will paint Paul as a second Georges who «veut souffleter ou battre une femme comme a fait cette exécration de Georges avec la Tolstoy».
  • 084.0360 (1879-03-01): «Après les soufflets de la Tolstoy et de Prodgers et la protection accordée par maman à l'auteur de ces scandales, il faudrait moi en homme».
