Pêcheuse guettant la marée (Breslau, Salon 1882)
Also known as: la pêcheuse de Breslau, la pêcheuse, Pêcheuse guettant la marée, une pêcheuse au bord de la mer
Overview
At the Salon of 1882 Louise Breslau showed two paintings (livret nos. 378-379 by the sequence; the OCR of the digitised catalogue is imperfect): "Pêcheuse guettant la marée; baie du Mont-Saint-Michel" and a Portrait de jeune homme. The catalogue entry reads "BRESLAU (Mlle Louise), née à Zurich (Suisse), élève de M. Tony Robert-Fleury. Avenue des Ternes, 40". The fisherwoman is thus the picture Marie calls "une pêcheuse au bord de la mer", which she says (December 1881) Breslau painted "cet été", i.e. the summer of 1881. The catalogue places the subject in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, on the Normandy-Brittany border (so "painted in Brittany" is only loosely right).
No image or current location was found; the work does not appear in Wikimedia Commons' Breslau categories.
Marie and this work
- 1881-12-18 (094.0087, Paris): "elle a fait un grand tableau cet été (et moi ?) une pêcheuse au bord de la mer. Ce doit être très bien et bien dans le goût du jour... Et moi rien."
- 1882-04-25 (094.0448): the painter Tony Robert-Fleury had called "la pêcheuse de Breslau" very good before Marie left Nice; now that it is "reçue avec le n° 2", he says it is only "pas mal". Marie is "pas contente" at the double standard applied to her own small picture.
- 1882-05-18 (095.0061): after seeing it on the Salon walls: "je ne vous cache pas que je suis soulagée de voir la pêcheuse de Breslau si médiocre."
