«Le général Rostovzeff, chef de la cour du grand-duc Nicolas», a relative of the Sapogenikoffs, whom Marie, Maman and ma tante visit at Peterhof on 9 August 1876 with Nina Sapogenikoff; he and his wife had known Maman and ma tante «il y a quatre ans à Nice» (064.0476); Marie names him again among «les personnes du grand monde qu'a connues maman il y a huit ans» (064.0499). Mon Journal t.8 index: «Rostovzeff (général) : 355, 358».Identification
Very probably Alexander Alexandrovich Rostovtsov (died 1888 in St Petersburg): adjutant to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder, promoted major-general on 1 April 1876, then Hofmeister of the Imperial Court, «и управлял Двором Великого Князя Николая Николаевича Старшего» (Russkij biografičeskij slovar', vol. 17, «Ростовцов, Александр Александрович», azbyka.ru). The office and the date fit Marie's «chef de la cour du grand-duc Nicolas» (about 0.85). The grand duke is therefore Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder (1831–1891), brother of Alexander II. Not Yakov Ivanovich Rostovtsev (1803–1860), the general of the peasant reform.Translation
Keep Marie's spellings «Rostovzeff», «Rostovtzeff».References in Diary
