Overview

A gentleman of Poltava society whom Marie meets during her stay in Little Russia in the autumn of 1882. She introduces him as "un M. Garnitsky, assez vieux et comme il faut" (096.0397, 096/1882-10-17) and later calls him "l'homme aimable de Poltava" (096.0459, 096/1882-10-29). The Mon Journal t.15 index has only "Garnitsky (M.) : 96, 100, 102-105, 107, 111". First name and position are not known.

Relevance to Marie

He is one of the men around Paul and papa during the wolf hunt and the round of parties of October-November 1882:
  • 1882-10-18 (096.0400): goes with Paul to Dikanka to arrange the hunt with "les petits princes" (probably the young Kotchoubey: Dikanka was the Kochubey estate, Wikipedia "Dykanka"; on 097.0045 Mme Volkowitsky comes "avec ses frères de Dikanka").
  • 1882-10-23 (096.0428): stands with papa, Michka and Marie on the right-hand side at the battue.
  • 1882-10-27 (096.0451-0452): at the hotel in Poltava with Michka and Lihopoy, then at the theatre; he tells Marie she looks just like Mme Miloradovitch, "qui a été une beauté célèbre".
  • 1882-10-29 (096.0459, 0465, 0469, 0471): a guest at the christening of Paul's son; "fait l'homme spirituel, se démène"; drinks with the Pomar, Paul and papa in the Chinese drawing room.
  • 1882-10-30, 10-31 (097.0006, 097.0008) and 11-07 (097.0045): still in the same company (dinner at the Pomar's; the departure of the guests; the "noble société" of 7 November).

Marie spells him "Garnitsky" everywhere except once, "Garnitski" (096.0451).
