Fontarabie

Overview

Fuenterrabía, now Hondarribia: the Spanish town on the French border at the mouth of the Bidasoa (source footnote at 093.0141). Marie spells it «Fontarabie» (French). She makes a day trip from Biarritz on 27 September 1881.

In Marie's diary

• 1881-09-27 (093.0141, Biarritz): «Hier à Bayonne en famille, aujourd'hui à Fontarabie et la famille aussi, je ne sors jamais sans les Karaouleff ... Fontarabie c'est charmant, du reste Biarritz est si commun, si maladroit dans sa beauté très banale que l'on est heureux d'en sortir. Et tout de suite, là sur le petit port des enfants mendiants, dont on ferait facilement un tableau.»
