Study of a Christ-model (Rome, January 1876)
Also known as: étude de Christ, modèle de Christ, ma première peinture d'après nature, Study of a Christ model
Overview
In January 1876, in Rome, Marie began painting lessons with a young Polish painter, Katorbinsky, and on 14 January 1876 she painted her first picture from a live model: a one-legged man with "une vraie figure de Christ" whom Katorbinsky had used for his own Christs. She finished the head in an hour and a half. The picture is not identified in any catalogue and nothing is known of its fate.
Marie and this work
Marie's later summary of her training (19 December 1877, 076.0447) counts this teaching as "trente-deux leçons, c'est-à-dire à peu près soixante heures de travail ... de peinture avec Katorbinsky à Rome", after which came the portrait of Collignon; she had confessed the thirty-two lessons to Tony Robert-Fleury (076.0449).
Open question
The inventory describes this entry as the "first life painting". That is Marie's own contrast in 052.0150 (copying from canvas with Bensa versus painting from nature), not a statement that it is the first of anything she ever painted from life; no further paragraph describes the finished head, and nothing links it to the 1885 catalogue (its heads and studies include several untitled "Tête (Étude)" entries).
