Chilovski
Also known as: Chilovski
Overview
A Russian of the Nice winter of 1873–74 (Mon Journal t.3 index: «Chilovski, 19, 84, 91, 256», no first name), who is the type to which Marie compares others by looks and manner: Prince Tchetvertinski «est Chilovski tout à fait, la même manière de parler» (017.0009); another prince «regarde tout à fait comme Chilovski, mais il est grand et porte une barbe courte» (017.0088); Count Merjeewsky «ressemble à Chilovski, a le teint pâle, les cheveux d'un blond cendré» (020.0490).
Relevance to Marie
On 12 January 1874, in Nice, he shows a photograph of Gioia, the Duke of Hamilton's mistress, the one «où elle est debout»: Marie compares the bent head of the countess de Galve to Gioia's on «la phot. que Chilovski a montrée» (015.0135, with a note that the word is written in Russian in the manuscript).
Identity uncertain
We are not sure who this is. Chilovski may be the same man as the «petit Chilowsky» of the next year (CHILOWSKY); the two spellings differ only in transliteration, but no source links them. If you can identify him, we would be glad to hear from you.
