Overview

«Antonio Lopez» is a name Marie herself calls a pseudonym. On 28 October 1881 she spent the day in the prison of Granada painting a convict (forçat) in the office of the deputy governor, the other prisoners crowding behind her, and wrote in the corner of the canvas: «Antonio Lopez (?) condamné à mort 1881, octobre, pour assassinat, vol et fausse monnaie. Pauvre homme mais enfin je [le] calomnie sous un pseudonyme. Il s'appelle peut-être Rodriguez ou Perez au lieu de Lopez» (093.0308). She had dressed him in «les crimes les plus énormes» but he had only passed counterfeit money (093.0305); she was making «un petit roman que je ressortirai à Paris» (093.0306). He is shown knitting stockings, as the prisoners do in the prison workshops.

Identity uncertain

We are not sure who this man was. His real name is not given; the diary says only that «Lopez» is invented, the label on the canvas is a fiction about a death sentence, and the actual offence was counterfeit money. The painting itself is not identified in the sources consulted here. If you can identify the sitter or the picture, we would be glad to hear from you.
