Overview

Amanda Carolina Vilhelmina Sidwall (Stockholm, 25 July 1844 – 11 January 1892), Swedish painter and illustrator. She studied at the women's department of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts from 1864, then under Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian in Paris (1874–77), stayed in Paris for several years, exhibited at the Musée du Luxembourg and had works accepted at the Salon in 1880 and 1882; she returned to Stockholm in 1883 and opened a studio. (Sources: Wikipedia, «Amanda Sidwall», citing the Svenskt biografiskt lexikon, https://sok.riksarkivet.se/sbl/Presentation.aspx?id=5899; Mon Journal t.13 index: «Sidval (Amanda) élève atelier Julian : 99-100, 104, 107».) Marie's «Sidval» is the usual French reading of the Swedish name; identity confidence 0.9 (Swedish, Julian's atelier, in Paris in 1881).

Relevance to Marie

  • 8 August 1881. At the atelier Marie finds «Amanda Sidval, une Suédoise vieille et vierge qui ne devrait pas du tout s'appeler Amanda» (092.0365; reader footnote: Amanda is Latin for «she who is to be loved»). She was thirty-seven. Marie takes her away when Julian does not come, and the next paragraph gives a mock-heroic verse signed «Amanda Sidval...» addressed to Julian, «O illustre Directeur d'atelier de peinture» (092.0366).
  • 12 August 1881. Marie goes to see «Amanda (!) qui travaille dans la cour de sa maison à Issy»; it does her good although «elle ne soit pas assez artiste pour que je sois vraiment remontée» (092.0397).
