Opening of the Congresscongres84 — I am not sorry to make my entrance in such illustrious company.

The Marshal is much surrounded. We have good seats on the right, the same as five years ago at the last Congress. The Marshal's wife, Claire and I.

Le maréchal est très entouré. Nous avons de bonnes places à droite, les mêmes qu'il y a cinq ans au dernier Congrès. La maréchale, Claire et moi.

It was not expected — and the session was very stormy.

On ne s'y attendait pas et la séance a été très orageuse.

Things perhaps never seen before at the tribune.

Des choses qu'on n'a peut-être jamais vues à la tribune.

Jules Ferry wished to speak; the right and the far left were howling to prevent him when M. Andrieux arrived at the tribune face to face with Ferry, looking so menacing that Ferry must have been frightened.

Jules Ferry voulait parler, la droite et l'extrême gauche hurlaient pour l'en empêcher lorsque M. Andrieux est arrivé à la tribune nez à nez avec Ferry et l'air si menaçant que Ferry a dû avoir peur.

But as both were there, Langlois came to hang onto the railing; the president covered himselfpresident-couvert and as Jules Ferry was descending from the tribune, Andrieux, with a small cocky air, took his glass of water and drained it as if drinking to the health of the Chamber.

Mais comme ils étaient là deux, Langlois est venu s'accrocher à la rampe; le président s'est couvert et comme Jules Ferry descendait de la tribune, Andrieux prit d'un petit air crâne son verre d'eau et le vida comme à la santé de la chambre.

This boyish prank produced a very comical effect, and while he leaned at the back of the tribune with his legs crossed, Langlois bellowed from the front — but the Chamber bellowed louder.

Cette gaminerie a produit un effet très drôle et pendant qu'il s'appuyait au fond de la tribune en croisant ses jambes, Langlois gueulait sur le devant mais la chambre gueulait plus fort que lui.

Very amusing, all of it — but what a melancholy spectacle. It is the monarchists who are the most infamous.

Très amusant tout ça, mais quel spectacle attristant. Ce sont les monarchistes qui sont les plus infâmes.

There is something in Claire's manner that irritates me — the poor girl has perhaps her own preoccupations, but I always claim everything as being about me.

Il y a je ne sais quoi dans l'air de Claire qui m'agace, la pauvre fille a peut-être ses préoccupations, mais je m'attribue toujours tout.

These people are charming to me, but I have had enough of them.

Ces gens sont charmants pour moi mais j'en ai assez.

They write from Paris that Bastien is so ill that they despair of saving him.

On m'écrit de Paris que Bastien est si mal qu'on désespère de le sauver.

Yes, and besides I am very irritable, and there is always a certain constraint with strangers. Sometimes the large white hands and black curly hair of the Marshal's wife irritate me... and Louis's pranks, and Claire's too long and too slender waist, and Marcel's dull expression. The Marshal alone is always agreeable and admirable.

Oui, et puis je suis très irritable, et il y a toujours une certaine contrainte avec des étrangers; parfois les grandes mains blanches et les cheveux noirs crépus de la maréchale m'agacent... et les gamineries de Louis et la taille trop longue et trop mince de Claire et l'air abruti de Marcel. Le maréchal seul est toujours sympathique et admirable.
