Snow has fallen, but I work all the same.

Il a tombé de la neige mais je travaille tout de même.

Émile Bastien comes to see the painting... He finds it good and says it will be well received at the Salon. I was very ashamed to show him this painting — so much in his brother's manner... I would have liked to hide like a thief, and I created a happy (?) digression by bringing up his brother again and the business of the decoration of my studio. That is to say — yesterday at table before Alice and others, he had appeared to fear being taken for a perspective teacher, and I seized on this pretext to write a letter in which I complain bitterly of being taken by his Brother and by him for a fool, for a flashy foreigner — the newspaper business where we appeared to be planting articles about the supposed decoration of the studio... For his brother was furious... And it was I who appeared to have boasted...

Emile Bastien vient voir le tableau... Il le trouve bien et dit qu'il sera bien vu au Salon. J'avais très honte de lui montrer cette peinture, tellement dans le genre de son frère... j'aurais voulu me cacher comme une voleuse et j'ai créé une heureuse (?) disgression en reparlant de son frère et de l'histoire de la décoration de mon atelier. C'est-à-dire voilà, hier à table devant Alice et d'autres, il a eu l'air de craindre de passer pour un professeur de perspective et j'ai saisi ce prétexte pour écrire une lettre ou je me plains amèrement d'être prise par son Frère et par lui pour une sotte, pour une rastaquouère enfin, l'histoire des journaux ou nous avons eu l'air de faire les articles sur la prétendue décoration de l'atelier... Car son frère a été furieux... Et c'est moi qui ai eu l'air de m'être vantée...

But are you aware that your suppositions cover us with ridicule! We — I — appear to be parading with famous names! Why, I could have fifty celebrated painters if I wished, and when I wished!

Quelles étrangères avez-vous connues ? Les gens comme il faut sont les mêmes partout ! Vous imaginez-vous avoir affaire à des rastaquouères qui se payent des articles de journaux ! Mais savez-vous bien que vos suppositions nous couvrent de ridicule ! Nous, moi, avoir l'air de parader avec des noms connus ! Mais j'en aurai cinquante peintres célèbres si je veux et quand je veux !

That is how I am rewarded for so greatly admiring your brother's talent! Well, it is truly unworthy. Etc. etc. etc. Which is somewhat true as well. And I am truly furious about this deplorable incident that keeps Bastien-Lepage away from us.

Voilà comment je suis récompensée de tant admirer le talent de votre frère ! enfin c'est vraiment indigne. Etc. etc. etc. C'est que c'est un peu vrai aussi. Et c'est que je suis vraiment furieuse de ce déplorable incident qui éloigne Bastien-Lepage de chez nous.
