It seems to me, however, that it is impossible to execute this picture entirely out of doors. The effect is not one of full daylight, and the evening lasts barely an hour... So I shall not be able to copy it as one does for ordinary pictures, as Bastien-Lepage does, and indeed all those who work in the open air. Ah, I am meeting here with too great difficulties. Well — I shall do it in Algeria as best I can, and then if there are things to redo... Or even if it has to be begun again... I shall at least have brought back the document...H me semble pourtant qu'il est impossible de faire ce tableau entièrement dehors. L'effet n'est pas de plein jour, et le soir ne dure qu'une heure à peine... Donc je ne pourrai pas le *copier* comme on fait pour les tableaux ordinaires, comme fait Bastien-Lepage et même tous ceux qui travaillent en plein air. Ah ! j'aborde là des difficultés trop grandes. Eh bien voilà, je le ferai en Algérie comme je pourrai et puis s'il y a des choses à refaire... Ou même si c'est à recommencer... j'aurai rapporté le document...
