Zillhardt offers a punch at the studio, having received an honourable mention. For Zillhardt this makes no impression on me — not as it would for Breslau. And by now an honourable mention seems a small thing.

We go to Étincelle's, where we find Aurore — decidedly a dawn well past its prime,1 but she has charming, rather sharp manners in the absence of the ineffable Lise. She is very amiable towards me, though we had not been introduced; we chatted and it was she who made the advances.

Nous allons chez Etincelle ou nous trouvons Aurore qui est décidément une aurore bien avancée mais elle a des façons charmantes et assez dégourdies en l'absence de l'inéffable Lise. Du reste elle est très aimable pour moi quoiqu'on n'ait pas fait de présentation, nous avons causé et c'est elle qui faisait les avances.

Then to old Mme Engelhardt's...

Puis chez la mère Engelhardt...

Ah! But let us not forget yesterday — dinner at the Karageorgevitches' and, in the evening, the arrival of Soutzo. Well, Bojidar did not bat an eyelid: he has a tremendous nerve. It was we who were embarrassed on their behalf.

Ah ! mais n'oublions pas hier, hier dîner chez les Karageorgevitch et le soir arrivée de Soutzo. Eh bien Bojidar n'a pas bronché, il a un toupet formidable. C'est nous qui étions gênées pour eux.

And then an evening at the Cartwrights'. I was determined to go once, so as not to offend that woman who is so kind to me. There were few people — not too many eccentric ladies.

Et puis soirée chez la Cartwright. J'ai tenu à y aller une fois pour ne pas désobliger cette femme si aimable pour moi. Il y avait peu de monde, pas trop de dames excentriques.

But no Bastien either. On the whole it is rather annoying that people speak ill of her and that it is awkward to be seen at her house. But once... so as not to appear contemptuous of them...

Mais pas de Bastien non plus. En somme c'est bien agaçant qu'on en dise du mal et que ce soit gênant de se montrer chez elle. Mais une fois... pour ne pas avoir l'air de les mépriser...

As for dinners where there will be nothing but painters, I shall go without fail.

Quant à des dîners où il n'y aura que des peintres j'irai absolument.

Still, how curious — Zillhardt has a mention and it seems as nothing to me.

Tout de même comme c'est curieux, Zillhardt a une mention et cela ne m'a l'air de rien.

A pun on Aurore's name: aurore means "dawn" — here "a dawn well past its prime" (une aurore bien avancée) implies she is no longer young. ↩
