Villevieille came yesterday — how very kind that is... I am always astonished when anyone shows me any interest... Perhaps this deep-down sense that I deserve nothing.And this evening Julian came; Tchernitsky and Brisbane had also dined. Julian is very amusing; he stayed after everyone else. I should like to put him off the horrible Amélie and marry him to Dina... Why not? He has his decoration and earns a great deal of money.
But it is a chimera — firstly because the implacable Amélie is inescapable, and secondly because she would be too unhappy; and however odious she may be, I have not the heart... "to pierce hers."
Villevieille est venue hier, c'est bien aimable ca... Je m'etonne toujours lorsqu'on me temoigne de l'interet... Peut-etre ce sentiment intime que je ne merite rien. Et ce soir c'est Julian qui est venu, il y avait aussi la Tchernitsky et Brisbane qui avaient dine. Il est tres amusant Julian, il est reste apres tout le monde. Je voudrais le degouter de l'horrible Amelie et le marier avec Dina... Pourquoi pas ? Il est decore et gagne beaucoup d'argent. Mais c'est une chimere, d'abord parce que l'implacable Amelie est ineluctable et ensuite qu'elle serait trop malheureuse, et quelque degoutante qu'elle soit je n'aurais pas le coeur.... "de lui percer le sien".
