Bogreyeff and Miloradovitch came today but as I was taking my harp lesson I only went to the salon for three-quarters of their visit. Maman gets carried away like me... sometimes. She builds up her hopes about this excellent Gritz and believes she sees significance in every word... as for me I have arrived at an almost complete indifference. I have no merit in it. Circumstances have accustomed me to all sorts of vexations and annoyances so I no longer believe in good things until they have passed and I find it quite simple that the others happen to me... Do not think that I consider Gritz a good thing, I leave that to Maman and I reiterate my wish of three years ago, that he not propose to me; I might perhaps accept him and it would not make me happy. As an individual he is a good heavyset fellow very red with black hair; suspicious and avaricious, he is a little deaf, which sometimes gives him an unintelligent air. The name and connections, very good. The fortune substantial but a mother who is fifty, has lovers and great energy. Besides... all this does not suit me.
