My aunt and Maman have been in bed for an hour, I would like to stay up all night smoking and talking nonsense for you know that I have a devil of a tongue... it seems that is the case with all virtuous women... Joseph... this name comes back to me every minute... I want to fall in love... on condition that one is in love with me. I want a little vulgar thing, a very young and silly man. I have dreamed of grand passions but I no longer want them... this evening. It would be droll with Joseph. He wanted to marry a courtesan and his mother the magnificent Mme Arnaud had all the trouble in the world to prevent this sweet union. He is a child besides, of twenty-one to twenty-two, not even... poor devil... I have drunk only lemonade and I am very gay... I say, there is no one to chat with... You, very adored readers, but a space of fifty years separates us. This journal is my life. It will be droll this dinner at Hecht's... very comical. If only there were A...rnaud. Do you remember our running joke at Nice with Bihovetz, called General Bibi, and my graces.
Ah! it is most astonishing
Ah! it is most surprising
Who! will tell me how
Ends! this incident
Ah! it is most astonishing
Ah! it is most etc...
We sang this to each other all day long.
Oh the Surprising Emile, oh the summer at Nice, oh supreme springtime of my youth! It is silly but it is charming.
Decidedly the space of fifty years does not favor conversation, it languishes. Good night.
I am not happy.
Not to mention Julia Acard! And if one wants to go quite far back one will find that the mistress of the Duke of Hamilton was named Amelie Gioia.
I am mortally sad, nothing succeeds for me. It is not worth living!
Blanc arrives and we begin to laugh. When the bell rings, Alexis, at the third ring the old prince arrived, then I flee and five minutes later enter the salon announcing myself: citizen Gambetta! Directoire hairstyle with the two ribbons, pearls at my neck, large white wool dress, belt under the breasts. I am very beautiful thus and in very high spirits this evening. A dazzling complexion, sparkling eyes, a conqueror's neck movements... God knows why... Then comes Moraes with his red nose. I hold court in my literary studio, I am admired, this evening I am beautiful... and what is the use!
Robert-Fleury and Julian are in the country. This week I will finish two or three small portraits and next Monday, I begin again to go to the studio.
Ah! Studio, no it is too stupid.
I love the name Joseph. Yesterday I believed for two acts that I saw him in the dark entrance of the stalls, I ogled the man and it was only at the third act that I noticed the error and that only because Hecht said that Joseph had not come... This false Joseph was the Count de Brazza whom I met at de Lesseps' and who felt obliged to pay a visit today because of the attention with which I gratified him. He resembles Joseph but as a caricature.
