Today's newspapers are heartbreaking. Gambetta is giving a party. On the occasion of this party I wrote to the Princesse to ask her to come and take me to Léon's, and I sent Bojidar an invitation worded as follows:
Father Léon, Son Arnaud, Mother Arnaud and Mother Couvelet beg Father Couvelet to do them the honour of coming to have a laugh with them at the Hôtel de la Prépondérance on Monday the 14th of July, anniversary of the seizure of the Bastille. We shall enjoy ourselves..
Here is the rascal's reply: [Missing] — besides, it is a men's party.
The Canoness de Faudoas came to see us.
It is tonight that the coffin arrives at Chislehurst — does that not make you shudder?
