[One line cancelled]
I wrote in Maman's name to the Prefect of Police, for the Captain Carey of our family came and made a disturbance. And when Madame my mother saw me writing she came and made feeble excuses for me not to write!... This awful household gnaws at me.
Madame de Lesseps sent her children, apologising for not being able to come herself, and today she sends me photographs of her husband, her children, and herself.
De Daillens, who had been ill, comes to dine with us.
