I have rarely — or more precisely, never — begun a year so well. In the morning I drew. In the afternoon Dina, Paul, and I walked on the Champs-Élysées on foot; then by cab — and we laughed because Paul, who had squeezed himself with difficulty into the coupé, could not get out again; his legs and head were already in the hallway while his feet were still under the seat.

We return home — and who do I find there! Paul de Cassagnac. He says he has suffered a great deal but that he is calm now, and having lunched with his parents, he has come to his best friends — us.

Nous rentrons et qu'est-ce que je trouve chez nous ! Paul de Cassagnac. Il dit qu'il a beaucoup souffert mais que le voilà calmé et qu'ayant déjeuné avec ses parents il est venu chez ses meilleurs amis, nous.

He stayed a long while, and of course I found it still too brief. He said some amusing things — for instance, that in conversation I am absolutely like a sleepwalker who rises in the night and walks on gutters and roof ledges, with no idea of the height at which she finds herself. It is true.

Il est resté longtemps et bien entendu j'ai trouvé que c'était encore trop peu. Il a eu quelques mots drôles, par exemple il a dit que dans la conversation je suis absolument comme une lunatique qui se lève la nuit et marche sur les gouttières et sur les rebords de toits, sans se douter à quelle hauteur et où elle se trouve. C'est vrai.

I... We were charming.

J'ai... Nous avons été charmants.

Dina and I are invited to dinner at the Boyds' — you will remember. But before that we go with Maman to Mme Dimitri Kanschine's — a very elegant great lady. Maman knows her from Geneva through the Sapogenikoffs, who held court there at that time.

Moi et Dina sommes invitées à dîner chez les Boyd, vous vous en souvenez. Mais avant cela nous allons avec maman chez Mme Dimitri Kanschine, très élégante et grande dame. Maman la connaît de Genève par les Sapogenikoff qui à cette époque y trônaient.

At the Boyds' no outsiders besides Lord Paget, the widower of Blanche Boyd. A fairly amusing evening — the three sisters are lively, and we devised plans for disguises and escapades almost as in the days of the Sapogenikoffs. These ladies are only too willing and are feeling out the ground to see how far things can go.

Chez les Boyd personne d'étranger, outre lord Paget le veuf de Blanche Boyd. Une soirée assez amusante, les trois sœurs sont gaies et nous avons projeté des déguisements, des escapades presque comme avec les Sapogenikoff. Ces dames ne demandent pas mieux et tâtent le terrain pour savoir si l'on peut aller.

What troubles me is Mme Boyd and Berthe, who want me to bring her to the atelier — and in the afternoon! Just think — the nude model; I warned them and spoke at length of sea baths and bathing drawers. Berthe assures me she is not prudish. All the same, I am worried. Anything at all might be turned into a weapon, a wounding pretext. It is a nuisance.

Ce qui m'ennuie c'est Mme Boyd et Berthe qui veulent que je l'emmène à l'atelier et l'après-midi ! Pensez-donc le modèle nu; j'ai prévenu et beaucoup parlé des bains de mer et du caleçon. Berthe m'assure qu'elle n'est pas prude. C'est égal, j'ai peur. Il n'y aurait que... n'importe quoi pour que ce soit une arme, un prétexte blessant. Ça m'ennuie.

Blanc dined with us; I had him there since the Boyds do not dine until half past seven.

Breslau gave me a small painting done from her sketch with the harp.
