We had talked of going to see If I Were King with Cassagnac — so one had to telegraph or write to him; instead, Maman went herself like a madwoman to tell his manservant that "the Russian ladies, etc., etc."

Two hours later one received a note from the great man, who had understood nothing and was asking what it was all about. And afterward one ate onion — the smell of which sends me into involuntary fits of fury.

Au bout de deux heures on recevait un billet du grand homme qui n'avait rien compris et demandait ce dont il s'agissait. Et après on a mangé de l'oignon dont l'odeur me donne des fureurs involontaires.

In truth, perhaps I really have drawn a great deal — though I do not think so; in truth I know nothing of the kind.

La mandoline est rentrée après avoir produit encore un effet. Amélie est furieuse et dit qu'elle ne croit pas aux phénomènes et que souvent on dit qu'on a commencé à peine quand il y a longtemps qu'on dessine. Attrape. Au fait peut-être ai-je vraiment dessiné et beaucoup, je ne crois pourtant pas, au fait je n'en sais rien.
