Marcuard did not go to the party yesterday evening.
Marcuard n'a pas été hier à la soirée.
Dina says he said something rather bold — here it is. I was saying in jest that he was a poor friend to take the Florentin's place beside the young harpist. It was rather amusing, because everyone except the baroness knew that it was she who was meant. Then Marcuard answered me:
Dina dit qu'il a dit une chose assez forte, la voici. Je disais en plaisantant qu'il était un mauvais ami de prendre la place du Florentin auprès de la jeune harpiste. C'était assez drôle parce que tout le monde excepté la baronne savait qu'il s'agissait d'elle. Alors Marcuard me répondit :
— Was it not he who had taken mine?
"- N'est-ce pas lui qui avait pris la mienne -."
