In the morning, a child of eleven with copper-coloured hair of a very interesting copper-pan shade. Black eyes. For the head study.

For the afternoon, a man named Persichini, for the life drawing.

Pour l'après-midi c'est un nommé Persichini pour l'académie.

And in the evening — for this evening saw the opening of the evening classes, from eight to ten — another man also, for the life drawing.

Et le soir car ce soir il y eut l'ouverture des cours du soir, de huit à dix heures, un autre homme aussi pour l'académie.

Monsieur Julian was quite astonished to see me there in the evening — he worked alongside us, and it amused me greatly. We joked a little about politics and all those things; current events are easily provocative. But as he refused to state his opinion, I played him the Marseillaise. [Words cancelled: That changes nothing for anyone.] Now, how many were we this evening? Myself, the Polish one, Forchhammer, a Frenchwoman, Amélie (the Spaniard), and an American. And then the master. Dina attended. It is so interesting! The light falls so beautifully on the model; the shadows are so simple.

Monsieur Julian a été tout ébahi de me voir là le soir, il a travaillé avec nous et cela m'a bien amusée. On a un peu plaisanté sur la politique et sur toutes ces choses; les actualités sont facilement piquantes. Mais comme il ne voulait pas dire son opinion je lui ai joué la Marseillaise. [Mots cancellés : Cela ne fait rien â tout le monde] Voyons combien étions-nous ce soir ? Moi, la Polonaise, Forchhammer, une Française, Amélie (l'Espagnole) et une Américaine. Et puis le maître. Dina assistait. C'est si intéressant! La lumière frappe si bien sur le modèle, les ombres sont si simples.

Instead of 363, the republicans have 326.16 But it could not have been otherwise. Those wretched conservatives made me feel sorry for them, with all their childish bogeymen to frighten the people. Au lieu d'être 363 ils sont 326, les républicains. Mais cela ne pouvait pas être autre-ment. Ces malheureux conservateurs me faisaient pitié avec tous leurs épouvantails enfantins pour effrayer le peuple. En supposant même que les électeurs voulussent cette bienheureuse conservation on ne pouvait pas s'attendre à ce qu'ils changeassent leurs chefs, leurs favoris pour trois ans, pour un en attendant.

The republicans had won 363 seats in the 1876 elections, giving rise to the "Groupe des 363" who defied MacMahon. In the October 1877 re-run elections (forced after MacMahon dissolved the chamber), the republicans returned 326 seats — still a decisive majority, but lower than before. ↩
