Georges is threatened with prison, of which the Ambassador will be informed. As this is very, very tiresome, we have begged the Baron to go to the prefect of police, and the prefect has granted a twenty-four-hour delay to give this dear gentleman time to make himself scarce. We shall therefore pay these wretched debts and dispatch him somewhere. As I do not like to appear falsely generous, I shall tell you that I am doing it for myself. It is impossible for me to remain in the same city as this dear uncle. His Silenus has finally abandoned him, and he is so desperate, so wretched, so mad — it is painful to see. I am quite undone to see him in such a state.
I dreamed of Alexandre. My aunt and Maman say he will end like Georges. Never! Never — because if he had the misfortune to fall into such a state I should pull him out of it; I should pay for him a comfortable and pleasant life and watch over him… And immediately I ask myself whether I would do the same for others… My God, yes — for all those who had not done me too great a wrong. Thus there is at present only one man I would let rot, and that is Antonelli. As for my father — I should come to his aid out of contempt and duty. Poor Audiffret I would help with pleasure… indeed I would help all those who came to me, as much as I could. Antonelli too — if I do not know precisely how I should behave toward him, it is because I fear he might think that my harshness comes from anger, and my help from love. I despise him profoundly, and it would truly pain me if he thought I knew he existed.
Yes — I would do the same for all others, but only if they asked me, or if someone pleaded on their behalf; whereas I should come to Alexandre's aid of my own accord. But I might perhaps tell my family of it… it would be a kind of innocent pose. Perhaps I should content myself with telling my journal — that is the more likely.
