Fortunately the races have been postponed; I shall have time to receive my dresses... but then, what is the point? Whether the respectable people of Florence are simply not demonstrative, or whether I am plain and insignificant, I have so far produced a thunderbolt effect on nobody. It is that damned Pergola being closed... and I would have given so much to make some kind of impression in Larderei's eyes. A natural enough desire, I think.
I saw them all at the Cascine, except the old countess. And I saw Namara again — the man with the dog, from Nice. I am always afraid those Nice people will spread all sorts of nonsense... I am in a bad mood... I have not a single hat that pleases me...
As usual, Dina and I got out and walked while Maman followed step by step in the carriage. In Florence that is how it is done — otherwise I should not have ventured it. I do not know who the three gentlemen were, but they followed us the whole time, walking ahead of us, which is the most correct manner. One of the three is a sort of Melissano.
Dina lost her bracelet and we went back to look for it — and those three were also searching, or pretending to, while walking ahead and only glancing round from time to time. Besides, their carriage was there, and when we took ours they soon caught up with us, for these creatures waited five minutes to keep up appearances. They ought to have done so from the very first day... if I am what I am accustomed to consider myself. In any case, they now know where we are staying. I do not at all dislike a following as discreet and proper as this; it is the vulgar pursuers I hate.
Ah! what a plaintive sound that ah has — because I am deflated, I have lost confidence in everything, even in myself... and this last above all is devastating... my journal is a misery and will be good for nothing, no one will even read it. I leafed through a few old notebooks... I know nothing... Listen — no! I am only humiliating myself by constantly using that word! It is stupid.
What on earth am I doing in Florence? I ask you! Ah, I disgust myself.
I have no business with Larderei; I don't even want to see him again, so it is not for him that I remain. As for the others — it is a lost cause; one doesn't make acquaintances in the Spanish fashion here, and we are more confined than in a prison.
As soon as I receive the dresses sent from Paris we shall leave, having attended those wretched races. I had wanted Gordigiani to paint my portrait; let us do it... we shall see.
Do you know the purpose for which I came here? Do you know what this extraordinary thing was that I wanted to recount only at the moment of execution? It is... well, here it is. I meant to abduct Larderei's daughter. And if I were in the same frame of mind as then, I would abduct her — it would be very original. But now I no longer want to, and... the child is not in the country as I had supposed, but with her mother...
And the cards predicted trouble with the police for me — so I abstain. You know, I am done with cards altogether; it is stupefying and unworthy of an intelligent being!

À l'Espagnole: informal courtship by window conversation without introduction, as supposedly practised in Spain.
