I am beginning to grow uneasy. I come back from the table d'hôte having drunk half a bottle of wine, and had a conversation about politics with a baron and baroness of unknown nationality. They seemed very satisfied and even a little astonished at the discourse of such a young pup as I.

We visited the studio of one Popoff, a sculptor. Nous avons visité l'atelier d'un certain Popoff, sculpteur. Les villas Pamphili et Borghése étant fermées nous sommes allées à la Farnesina, les bords du Tibre étaient passablement fertiles en voitures cet après-midi. Et de très loin j'ai reconnu les chevaux de Clément Torlonia, qui ne tarda pas de nous devancer en ôtant son chapeau et en souriant comme lui seul sourit. Il était avec sa mère très belle et presque jeune. Torlonia gagne cinquante pour cent quand il sourit. Je suis folle de son sourire.

For the first time in Rome I walked at the Pincio on foot. Everyone was quite surprised to see me walking.

Antonelli se promenait avec une dame très laide et un vieux monsieur aussi à pied. Ensuite nous l'avons vu auprès d'un landau, puis dix fois à pied, en fiacre et de toutes les manières imaginables. Il s'est secoué comme jamais. J'ai tout raconté aux miens et maman trouve que j'avais raison de faire comme j'ai fait.

A piece of news! Fanny Lear2 is in Rome. I saw her today. She is a pretty woman — but with an unhappy expression; and the figure — as to the figure one cannot judge at present, for I believe she is pregnant.

Une nouvelle I Fanny Lear est à Rome. Je l'ai vue aujourd'hui. C'est une jolie femme, mais une expression malheureuse, et la taille, quant à la taille on ne peut pas juger à présent car je crois qu'elle est enceinte.
