Now that Maman is at the pavilion I am there nearly all day.

My aunt recounts the abduction of Giroflafn047-002 and my fury — and I smile. It is very cold with heavy rain.

Ma tante raconte l'enlèvement de Girofla et ma colère, et je souris. Il fait grand froid et une pluie très forte.

I go out nonetheless. But in the evening we return to the same conversation — I want to go into society. No one could imagine the inner conflicts I endure!

I have received my painted portrait. It is a little shorter than this page but admirably done and a very good likeness.

J'ai reçu mon portrait peint. Il est un peu plus court que cette feuille, mais fait admirablement et tout à fait ressemblant.

Are we women or brutes? That is the question I have been putting to Dina since this morning. Were we born with heads or without them? In what does woman surpass the other animals?

Sommes-nous des femmes ou des brutes ? Voilà la question que je pose à Dina depuis ce matin. Sommes-nous nées avec une tête ou sans tête ? En quoi la femme est supérieure aux autres animaux ?

If we are women, if we have heads, and if woman is truly superior to the other animals, we must prove it by making the acquaintance of the English family.

Si nous sommes des femmes, si nous avons une tête et si vraiment la femme est supérieure aux autres animaux, il faut le prouver en faisant connaissance avec les Anglais.

It is difficult! I know it perfectly well — they know no one through whom we might know them. That is why I go about asking everyone whether we are women or brutes.

C'est difficile ! Je le sais bien, ils ne connaissent personne par qui on pourrait les connaître. C'est pour cela que je m'en vais demandant à tout le monde si nous sommes des femmes ou des brutes ?

A fine achievement, to make the acquaintance of people moving in the same circle as oneself — that takes neither wit nor invention. But here lies the difficulty.

La belle affaire que de faire connaissance avec des personnes tournant dans le même cercle que vous, il ne faut ni esprit ni invention pour cela. Mais ici voilà la difficulté.

— Ma chère, me dit Dina, il faut les avoir avant l'arrivée du rossignol sans cela ce sera affreux.

— Yes, he has me in his power; for what can I produce? Saetone, Galula? He will not believe in them. While he has at his disposal, even within our own house and the Sapogenikoffs', several very credible alternatives.

— Oui, il me tient; car que puis-je prendre ? Saëtone, Galula ? Il n'y croira pas. Tandis que lui a à sa disposition, même dans notre maison et celle des Sapogenikoff, *plusieurs choses très croyables .*

If he comes back and gives me the cold shoulder, I am done for.

S'il revient et s'il fait la tête je suis flambée.

What I have just said is not the pinnacle of refinement — but it is entirely true.

Ce que j'ai dit là n'est pas la fleur de la distinction mais c'est entièrement vrai.
