Georges continues to revolt me. Any other man, after doing what he has done, would find his whole life barely long enough to make people forget his misdeeds — and he (but if I say this no one will believe me) accuses his entire family and, from being the guilty party, turns himself into the judge! It is unbelievably brazen.
But let us leave this charming model of sobriety and the many other virtues.
It should be said that it is raining, and consequently the Italian promenade was made by carriage. Poor Emile d'Audiffret has had a coat made just like the one the Duke was wearing on the last day of the races two winters ago. Miser puer! And to think that Dina odiat hunc puerum — or nearly so. [Crossed out: It is] Not surprising, for he is quite handsome.
I know it is not yet time — but one will not have time to look back before I find myself grown and ready to go into society. That is what I was saying in my fourth notebook, after writing that in Nice I cannot go into society. And indeed I have barely turned round and here I am grown — truly grown. I turned sixteen on 12 November in the Russian style; I have been sixteen for eleven days. Since I was meant to be born on 12 January rather than 12 November, my name day is celebrated in January — so it is in January that I ought properly to say I turned sixteen.
Sixteen! Ah, what a glorious age — and how it fills me with anxiety and joy at once! I am on the eve of entering society, on the eve of giving battle. Very well — one will do one's best. It is frightening all the same. What frightens me most is our position.
Last evening, having stretched out on the rug before the fireplace, I declared I would not move until someone told me where and how I was to go into society. Having opened in this way, I delivered the following speech:
— I am sixteen; next winter I shall be seventeen, and next winter I intend to go into society. I am giving you warning in advance so there shall be no cause for surprise. Do not expect me to consent to moulder away until twenty, as Dina is mouldering.
At seventeen I want to go out — one should begin at sixteen, but I am a year behind, and I shall make it up later. At seventeen I cease lessons; I shall do nothing but piano, singing, painting — and then I shall read.
Listen to me well: next winter I shall go into society — you hear me — next winter I shall need a different position from the present one. You will not be able to say you were not expecting it. You are well and truly warned.
I think this is stated clearly enough — but their forgetful and flighty minds will not remember tomorrow; yet I shall always be there, opening their ears and eyes with a "flapper" like those men of the flying island in Gulliver's Travels. And then I shall pray — my eternal resource, the only true one. It was all very well to make plans from a distance, but up close as it is now, it is another matter entirely, and I am at a loss.

Notes

In Latin in the original — "Poor boy!"
In Latin in the original — "hates this boy."
The Russian (Julian) calendar ran thirteen days behind the Western (Gregorian) calendar. Marie's birthday of 12 November (Russian style) was 24 November in the Gregorian calendar.
In English in the original. In Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726), the Laputans carry servants called "flappers" who tap them on the ears and mouth to recall their attention when their minds drift.
