We left London at twenty past four, I with all imaginable regrets. And at six o'clock we arrived at Canterbury.

In the street we meet Mrs Howard; she recognizes us. [Crossed out: In great haste] We jump from the carriage before the house already; Mrs Howard, who was on foot, comes running, and then all the children.

Lise has become pretty -- prettier than her sister, who loses a great deal in her presence.

Lise is good, sincere and kind; everything I shall say will be principally about Helene -- she does nothing but repeat.

Naturally they ask why I am pale.

They give us very good rooms, very comfortable. There -- that is the arrival.
