(Brown Worth dress, brown Virot hat, hanging golden curled hair -- not bad.) I take my first bath at two o'clock; there is no one. My bathing costume is badly made; coming out I could find no towels; the dye ran. I am very displeased.

With my aunt to dine at the Hotel de la Plage; I put on my white dress and we go to join our people and the Tamancheffs at the Cercle des Bains.

As we entered: "There's Pamphilii," said my aunt; indeed, he was leaving.

I told Lise about Merjeewsky. He took yesterday's affair seriously and comes with his mother and Basilevitch, who chases after him and wants to take him from me by force.

As soon as he came to greet us I rose, asking my aunt to leave. Naturally he went away. I was perhaps wrong: since I shall not speak to him for two weeks, I ought to have stayed.

I see that not speaking is a serious matter. At Spa, Basilevitch told Gericke she would not speak to him and he grew angry. I am so young; I know nothing.

I stayed one more dance. Basilevitch shows in every way that Merjeewsky is near her. She senses where he is in love and wants to take him. It is funny: she is a woman of thirty and I a little dog of fifteen. It is all the same to me -- all the more so because she will not have him.
