Dimanche 16 février 1873

Fine weather, windy; we went to Rumpelmayer's for hot chocolate.

Beau temps, venteux, nous prîmes du chocolat chez Rumpelmayer.

To church (blue dress). At lunch Mme Savelieff brought her nephew M. Savelieff as well, who is here with his wife for a week. Then to the music, a great many people. Boreel with two horses, while we were stopped at the music, passed us — but not directly in front — he did not go too fast and greeted Maman; I blushed a great deal and asked: — Why does he greet you, Maman? — He is a man of good standing, she replied. He greeted her and that means he does not wish to avoid me; if he wished to, he could perfectly well not greet her, not even having been introduced. Or perhaps he greeted her to see what expression I would make at that moment. He passed us gently several times — he was truly very handsome today! I liked him very much, but one must not show it...

A l'église (robe bleue). A déjeuner Mme Savelieff nous a amené son neveu M. Savelieff aussi, qui est ici avec sa femme pour une semaine. Puis à la musique, beaucoup de monde. Boreel avec deux chevaux, pendant que nous étions arrêtés à la musique, nous passa mais pas en face, il ne passa pas trop vite et salua maman, j'ai rougi beaucoup et je demande: — Pourquoi il te salue, maman ? — *C'est un homme bien,* elle répond. Il l'a saluée et cela veut dire qu'il ne veut pas m'éviter; s'il voulait, il pouvait bien ne pas saluer, n'étant même pas présenté. Ou peut-être il a salué pour voir quelle figure je ferai en ce moment. Il nous passa doucement plusieurs fois, il était vraiment très beau aujourd'hui ! Il m'a beaucoup plu, mais il ne faut pas le montrer...

Oh! how I wish he would be introduced to us, and if one day he alludes to my being in love with him, I shall tell him that I do not love him at all, but that having one day found a resemblance between him and my dog, I said this at home several times and was teased about it, and that it is because of this that I blushed upon seeing him. I imagine his astonishment. And then perhaps he will want to make himself loved by me, and he will love me.

Oh ! comme je voudrais qu'il nous soit présenté et si un jour il *fait allusion à ce* que je l'aime, je lui dirai que je ne l'aime pas, mais qu'ayant un jour trouvé une ressemblance entre lui et mon chien, j'ai dit cela à la maison plusieurs fois et qu'on m'a taquinée et que c'est à cause de cela que je rougissais en le voyant. Je m'imagine son étonnement. Et alors peut-être il voudra se faire aimer de moi et il m'aimera.

I believe the Duke is at Gioia's because she has not gone out.

Je crois que le duc est chez Gioia parce qu'elle n'est pas sortie.

Too much loving, etc.

Going to bed, I hear Mme de Mouzay and Mme de Daillens arrive; I lead the latter to the small yellow salon, which is dark; I am in my coat and have her tell me about Mme Prodgers's ball. She tells me in a whisper: I ask about the crowd, then about "fat Boreel." He was dressed as a Louis XV Pierrot, in a pearl grey and cherry waistcoat, very fresh and very fine, she told me; so I said: "Grey and cherry — those are the colors of a jockey... I believe the Duke of Hamilton's," and she finished the word Hamilton with me. A few more words on that. We now have staying with us: Mme de Mouzay, Mme de Daillens, M. and Mme Anitchkoff, M. de Patton. Maman went to the theater but came back quickly.

En me couchant j'entends arriver Mme de Mouzay et Mme de Daillens, je mène la dernière au petit salon jaune, sombre, je suis en mon manteau et je lui fais raconter le bal de Mme Prodgers, elle me raconte tout bas: je lui demande beaucoup de monde puis "le gros Boreel". Il était habillé en pierrot Louis XV, à veston gris de perle et cerise, très frais et très bien, m'a-t-elle dit, alors j'ai dit: "Gris et cerise, ce sont les couleurs d'un jockey... je crois celui du duc de Hamilton", elle finit le mot Hamilton avec moi. Encore quelques mots sur cela. Nous avons maintenant chez nous: Mme de Mouzay, Mme de Daillens, M. et Mme Anitchkoff, M. de Patton. Maman est allée au théâtre mais elle est vite retournée.
