Overview

The Villa Audiffret was a villa in Nice that the Bashkirtseff family considered renting in June 1873. It is described as "assez jolie" (quite nice) and "commode, comme il faut" (comfortable, proper), though not very elegant. It had space for a croquet lawn. The price was acceptable and the family was nearly decided to take it.

The Audiffret family (Emile d'Audiffret and his family) was a prominent Nice family; the villa bears their name. It should not be confused with the person Emile d'Audiffret himself.

In a later context (June 12, 1873, 005.0247), the Bashkirtseffs visit "villa Audiffret" and find the asking price 7,000 francs, which can also be had on the Promenade — so they decline again.

Research Notes

The Audiffret family was well established in Nice aristocratic circles. The villa was a regular destination during the Bashkirtseff family's villa-hunting season in 1873.
