Overview

On 19 May 1881, in Paris, Marie writes: "Depuis mardi [17 May] je fais le portrait de la fille du célèbre baryton Maurel. Elle a quatorze ans et demi et est ravissante. C'est Villevieille qui l'a amenée." (092.0024). The father is the baritone Victor Maurel, who with his wife lived in a small house in the rue Lord Byron and gave "soirées artistiques"; he came to the atelier with a visitor named Saint Amand (#Saint_Amand; not identified here) the day before and again on the 19th, and Marie, hearing that he also paints, remarks that he is a painter as Ingres was a violinist. On 21 May: "Ce matin j'ai fini le portrait de la petite Maurel" (092.0034), with Villevieille present and the girl's mother visiting. Three days of sittings, then. The girl's first name is not given. The portrait's whereabouts are unknown; no image.

Marie and this work

It is a portrait made in the atelier in spring 1881; the sitter was brought by #Villevieille. Victor Maurel (1848-1923), as the project's footnote on 092.0024 describes him, was one of the leading baritones of the day and later created Verdi's Iago and Falstaff. The inventory placed the portrait in "Jul 1881"; the diary dates it 17 to 21 May 1881. The 1885 memorial catalogue was not checked for a matching item by this entry.
