Volotchisk

Overview

The Russian frontier station on the line from Austria. Volochysk faced Podvolochysk (Austria) across the Zbruch river and was a customs and border checkpoint between the Russian and Habsburg empires (Wikipedia, «Volochysk»; JewishGen Volochisk pages). In July 1876, with Marie on her way to Russia, her father's telegram reads: «Si vous allez directement de Volotchisk chez moi, votre frère vous accompagnera... télégraphiez quand. Bashkirtseff» (064.0316). She goes instead by Berlin to Petersburg (see Wirballen).
