An aristocratic woman in Nice society whom Boreel was visiting. The title "vicomtesse" indicates nobility, placing her in the upper echelons of Nice society that Marie and her family moved in. Marie also mentions a "Vigier" (possibly the Vicomte, her husband) whom she encounters and exchanges greetings with.
Identification (2026-10-21)
The vicomtesse is the soprano Sophie Cruvelli (Johanne Sophie Charlotte Crüwell, 1826–1907), who retired from the stage on her marriage to Vigier in 1855 (Wikipedia, "Sophie Cruvelli"). Marie names her so in 1876: «sa femme, la célèbre Sophie Cruvelli» (063.0321); the edition's index has «Vigier (vicomtesse Sophie), née Cruvelli» (Mon Journal t.8, index). That the Nice vicomtesse of 1873 is the same woman is likely but not checked against the 1873 passage (0.8). Her husband: #Vicomte_Vigier.Diary References
- 1876-07-15 (063.0321): named as Vigier's wife, «la célèbre Sophie Cruvelli», when Marie tells the Wartel story within his hearing.
- 1873-02-19: Marie observes Boreel going to visit the Vicomtesse Vigier; later encounters Vigier (likely the Vicomte) and they exchange greetings.
Social Context
The Vigiers appear to be part of the established aristocratic society in Nice, maintaining the formal visiting customs typical of their class. Their connection to Boreel suggests they moved in overlapping social circles with Marie's family.Більшу частину цього глосарія досліджено за допомогою мовних моделей штучного інтелекту та звірено з наведеними джерелами; помилки можливі.
