Description
The theatre of Naples opened in 1779 as the Teatro del Fondo, originally for opera buffa; it was renamed Teatro Mercadante, after the composer Saverio Mercadante, in 1870 or 1871 (sources differ: Wikipedia, "Teatro del Fondo", gives 1871; the Comune di Napoli site gives 1870). Marie still uses the old name in April 1876: «nous ... arrivons au théâtre Frondo en plein premier acte de mon cher "Barbier de Séville"» (058.0241, 19 April 1876; «Frondo» as printed in the docx).
