Overview

Isidore (Nikolsky, 1799–1892), Metropolitan of Novgorod, St Petersburg and Finland from 1860 and presiding member of the Holy Synod, the senior bishop of the Russian Church (footnote at 101.0381, citing orthodoxwiki, «Isidore (Nikolsky) of St. Petersburg», and prlib.ru).

Relevance to Marie

Stub replaced. Identification as Isidore from the footnote RSR of 2026-10-21 (not re-derived); Marie names the office only. The «criminal friendship» is hearsay, quoted as such.

References in Diary

On 18 September 1883 Marie reports that her mother spent a month in St Petersburg, introduced by Mme Doubelt to «le Métropolite (notre pape ou à peu près)», who gave her a letter to Prince Orloff, the ambassador in Paris. Marie adds that the letter must be good, since the «saint père» has had for years a friendship «que l'on dit criminelle» with Mme Basilewsky, Mme Doubelt's mother (101.0381).
