Immanuel Kant

Basic Information

Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), German philosopher of Königsberg, author of the Critique of Pure Reason (1781) (en.wikipedia «Immanuel Kant»). The Mon Journal t.12 index lists him as «Kant (Emmanuel), philosophe allemand : 111».

Significance in Marie's Diary

• 4 September 1878 (082.0291–0294): Marie argues against what she takes to be his doctrine, «Kant prétend que les choses n'existent que par notre imagination», accepting it for feelings but not for objects. The paraphrase is hers.
• 1881 (094/1881-12-18): Sarah Purser, «peintre et philosophe», with whom the students at Julian's have endless discussions «sur le Kantisme».
