Herculanum (Herculaneum)
Roman town on the Bay of Naples, buried with Pompeii by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 (Wikipedia, «Herculaneum»). Marie names it on 26 August 1883 while reacting to the Ischia earthquake, in a passage of angry religious scepticism: «Passe encore pour Herculanum et Pompeï car là Dieu punissait ceux qui envoyaient ses apôtres au martyre ... Mais ici. Où sont les crimes atroces ... d'Ischia ?» (101.0242).
